Your tree may be growing too close to a building or is blocking light to the garden. It might need management for health and safety reasons. It’s worth getting advice from a professional tree surgery expert who can advise what kind of tree care your tree needs.
Different trees require different types of tree work and pruning at different times of the year. Maybe to reduce the chance of spreading disease or maybe to maximise flowering. For example, magnolia trees should be pruned after they have flowered to maximise the flowering next spring. Trees in the Prunus genus are best pruned in the summer to reduce the chance of getting silver leaf disease.
Trees can be cut down at any time of year. Some trees will regrow from a cut stump, so may require poisoning. In this case, the poison will only take effect during the growing season (March onwards).
Some species of tree can be pollarded and will regrow (e.g. sycamore, lime, London plane). Some trees require more selective pruning and will start to decay if pruned too heavily (e.g. cherry, birch or mimosa).
